A member of the Big Ten Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Buckeyes derive their name from the state tree of Ohio. Playing out of Ohio stadium, the Buckeyes have been in existence for over 100 years. The stadium seats over 102,000 fans. Block O is the official section of the loudest cheering Buckeye patrons.

The Buckeyes fans are treated to several traditions including the the dotting of the "i", where a senior tuba player or celebrity has the honor of capping a performance of Script Ohio by the Buckeye Band. Another band ritual is the Skull Session. Favorite songs of Buckeye faithful are Carmen Ohio, Across the Field, Buckeye Battle Cry and Hang on Sloopy. The chant O-H-I-O can be heard during games and across the globe among OSU fans.

The Hive is a tradition Head Coach Jim Tressel started with his Buckeyes where players join arms and come out of the locker room at a controlled tempo. Another gameday ritual is the Pre-Game Circle where the team circles the strength and conditioning coach and yells to get fired up.

A players tradition includes the receiving of a small charm that is called the Gold Pants. This charm is given to Buckeye players and coaches upon the defeating of the team up north, otherwise known as the Michigan Wolverines football team. This is the biggest rivalry in all of sports and Beat Michigan Week starts the festivities rolling at the end of the regular season.

Many traditions at Ohio State were developed under Legendary Coach Woody Hayes. Hayes directed the Bucks to 3 National Championships.

Craig Krenzel was the last quarterback to win a championship. He received snaps in 2002 from his now brother-in-law, who is a member of the New York Jets, Nick Mangold. The two Buckeyes married sisters, daughters of an Ohio State Buckeyes retired professor named Joe Barr.

UPDATE:

On Friday, August 12, 2011 the NCAA committee that handles rule violations met with Former Head Coach Jim Tressel AD Gene Smith, The Ohio State University President Dr. E. Gordan Gee and new Buckeye Coach Luke Fickell to discuss possible sanctions in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Jim Tressel took responsibilty for not notifying the NCAA that his players had accepted gifts and benefits in exchange for Buckeye memorabilia. He also, according to reports, did not tell his bosses at OSU for several months.

"I appreciated the opportunity to appear today before the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions," Gee said in a statement released by the school. "The committee treated us fairly and gave us ample time to share our perspective. Throughout, we have been determined to do what is right in responding to the information we discovered. As we move forward, I am committed to ensuring that The Ohio State University is a model for other colleges and universities. Our institution expects nothing less."

Tressel's resigned in May of 2010 after receiving heavy pressure from the University and Buckeye supporters. Tatoo-gate caused outrage from many Buckeye football Alumni including ESPN Analyst and former QB Kirk Herbstreit who openly criticized then Quarterback Terrelle Pryor. After six OSU football players including Pryor were nabbed in the scandal, they became dead men walking among many Buckeye diehards.

The result of the August meeting could see the Buckeye team lose scholarships and a chance to compete in a bowl game at the end of the 2011-12 season. This comes after already forfeiting all 2010 wins and being put on probation for two years.

After up to a six week deliberation, Buckeye nation will await to see what further penalties are enforced on the storied program.
