Donizetti's Don Pasquale combines glorious singing, wonderful acting and delightful music. The production lasts about two and one half hours but the audience doesn't see to care. The opera features Norina, Ernesto and the plotting Dr. Malatesta along with leading character Don Pasquale.

Don Pasquale is an elderly man who desires to thwart his nephew, but is bested by a beautiful woman and his nephew instead. He is sympathetic, lovable, laughable and charming.

The plot is familiar in classic literature and theater. The wealthy older Don Pasquale wants to punish his rebellious nephew, Ernesto, who refuses to marry a woman his uncle chose for him. To get even, Pasquale decides to marry and provide an heir, thus cutting Ernesto out of his inheritance.

A friend of both Pasquale and Ernesto, Dr. Malatesta, decides to help Ernesto who is in love with the widow Norina. Malatesta suggests to Pasquale he marry his virtuous sister then shares his plans with Norina. She goes to Pasquale’s mansion and pretends to be Malatesta’s shy and passive sister, Sofronia. The feisty and self-confident Norina plays the part of the convent-schooled girl and marries Pasquale in a mock ceremony. Unaware of Malatesta’s scheme Ernesto is brokenhearted when he learns that Norina married Pasquale. He discovers the ruse and plays along enjoying the mischief. Norina is a smart woman in control. In reality this opera is current.

Norina turns into a shrew and begins taking over the household. She has very little time for Pasquale and enjoys wild spending and redecorating. The final act containing pathos and comedy has a happy ending for the couple. When the curtain closes we see a wiser more lovable Don Pasquale.
